HIDDEN IN THE SHADOWS

When the problems of life seem overwhelming, the most natural response is to go to bed and pull up the covers over our head, hoping that the problems will all go away. We want to hide from our problems. But there is a much better way of dealing with the challenges of life and King David tells us what that is. In Psalm 17:8 he writes “Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings.” David knew that when life got difficult, the Lord was his hiding place. God doesn’t have wings, of course. The Bible says that God is Spirit. But it often uses human terms to describe the indescribable God. And so David writes that God hides him in the shadow of His wings. By faith, David placed himself under the protection and care of the God who had proved over and over to provide all that he needed for safety from spiritual and physical enemies. We can do the same thing. Over and over the Lord calls us to cast all our anxiety and care upon Him because He cares for us. It is normal and understandable for us to crave a place of refuge that we can run to and hide. There is only one place that offers that total peace and protection, and that is the loving care of the God who created you and has revealed Himself to you in the person of Jesus Christ.
