Discovering the Main Calling of a Christian’s Life: It’s A Personal Journey

Now that’s a question I’ve wrestled with for a long time: What is the main calling of my life as a Christian? Maybe you’ve asked yourself the same thing. As Christians, we hear a lot about God’s purpose for us, about following His will, and living out our faith—but what does that really mean?

In my own walk with Christ, I’ve come to realize that while there are many layers to our calling, it all boils down to one simple, beautiful truth: we are called to love. This might sound almost too simplistic at first, but if you look deeper, love is at the heart of everything God asks of us.

The Greatest Commandment: Love

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, His response was clear: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…and love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39). In two sentences, He sums up what life as a Christian should look like.

Our calling begins with a deep, personal love for God. It’s a love that isn’t passive, but one that moves us into action, into a relationship with Him. And through that love, we’re called to love others. It’s not just about the people we naturally get along with but everyone—the difficult ones, the strangers, the people we don’t understand. This, I’ve found, is where the challenge and beauty of the Christian life meet.

Loving God First

If I’m honest, learning to love God with all my heart is still and likely always will be a journey. There are days when distractions pull my attention away, and life gets messy. But I’ve realized that love for God isn’t something we have to muster up on our own. It grows out of spending time with Him, in prayer, in His Word, and just being present. When I make time for God, everything else seems to make more sense and fall into place. My perspective changes, and my heart softens.

One thing that’s been crucial for me is making my faith less about following rules and more about nurturing a relationship. God isn’t just looking for obedience—He wants our hearts. When we focus on loving Him first, the rest of our calling becomes clearer.

Loving Others Well

Loving people sounds easy until you try to do it in the everyday moments. The rude customer at the store, the person who wronged you years ago, even the friend going through a tough time—loving others can be messy and it always involves an investment, a sacrifice on our part. I’ve struggled with this, and I’ve come to see that loving others is less about my feelings and more about reflecting God’s love through my actions.

It’s about being patient when I’m frustrated, forgiving when it’s hard, and showing kindness in the little things. Sometimes, it’s as simple as listening to someone who needs to be heard or offering a helping hand. Other times, it means extending grace when I don’t feel like it. But in those moments, I’ve felt God’s love flowing through me in ways I never thought possible.

Walking in Our Unique Callings

The beautiful thing about God is that He doesn’t call us all to the same exact path. We each have unique gifts, passions, and opportunities. Some of us are called to ministry, others to teaching, art, business, or parenthood. But no matter what our individual calling looks like, the foundation remains the same: we are called to love.

I’ve found that when I focus on loving God and loving people, I begin to see His calling unfold in unexpected ways. Doors open, opportunities come, and I feel more aligned with His purpose for my life.

Embracing Our True Purpose

If you’re like me, you’ve probably asked, What is God’s will for my life? And while there are specific details He will reveal along the way, I’ve learned that the core of our calling is something we can all embrace today: loving God fully and loving others deeply. Everything else flows from that.

I still don’t have all the answers, and I’m learning as I go. But I’m grateful that God’s main calling for us is simple and powerful. When we choose to live in the moment, in love, we’re stepping into His greater purpose for our lives, and that’s a journey worth taking.
