Have you noticed the pressure lately of conforming to the world? Advertising, our peers, our employers, all want you to act a certain way. News outlets and influencer websites want you to think a certain way…your friends want you to be a certain way.
The world has a way of acting, thinking and being and it wants everybody to follow along. However, as usual, the Kingdom of God turns everything upside down.
The apostle Paul writes in Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
This causes me to think of those Tupperware Jello moulds mom used to use, those plastic containers with a rose imprint on the bottom that you poured Jello into. After a couple of hours in the fridge, the Jello had taken the exact shape of the mould. This is the picture Paul is painting here. The world wants to pour us into its mould so we can be shaped and changed.
Paul warns against letting this happen. Instead, we are to be transformed by having our minds renewed so that we begin to think, act and become more and more like Jesus. By so doing we will find ourselves in the centre of His will for our lives and there is no better place for the follower of Jesus.
