Us people can be so fickle, can’t we? Today’s hot trend, is tomorrow’s “old” news, in a heartbeat. In an age of the 24/7 instant news cycle, we seem to always need something new to consume and “tickle” our fancy…keep us interested.
Unlike most of the love in the world, God’s love for us is never changeable. The Psalmist describes God’s love this way in Psalm 89:1-2: “I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever; with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations. I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.” The Psalmist understood the love of God as well as anyone in the Old Testament. The heathen nations around had gods that had to be pleased and persuaded, cajoled and bribed. Not so the God of Israel. He was uniquely loving and even when correcting them, he did so to draw them back to Himself. He had promised that He was setting in motion a plan for their ultimate salvation that would guarantee their relationship with Him for eternity. No matter what happened to them, as individuals and a nation, they counted on God’s steadfast love and faithfulness. So can we. No matter what we have done, no matter how far we have drifted from Him, He loves us and draws us back to Himself. We are simply called to declare that to our generation, so that others might put their trust in Him and experience His faithful and steadfast love for them too.
