In this day of readily available GPS technologies, we have all likely heard stories of people who followed blindly the directions of their navigation system and ended up driving into a farmer’s field or pond. While these techie gadgets are amazing they are far from perfect. It has always been a challenge for people to get safely from point A to point B.
I always think of Pinocchio trying to walk to school and how he is interrupted by the sly fox who distracts him from his intended destination.
If that is the case physically, it is even more so spiritually. Every day we are faced with ethical decisions that can have an impact for good or bad. Some have greater impact than other, granted, but those of us who are followers of Jesus Christ are committed to consistency in our walk with Him. So we need to pray, as David did in Psalm 25:4: “Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow.” A life of consistent purity always begins with this prayer – Lord, show me the way you would have me live. And then God will drive us to His word, the Bible, because in it He clearly lays out His plan for His people and the principles by which we are to live. The Bible also gives us the promises of God for the resources He provides to live a life that honours and pleases Him. Even before we pray “show me the right path” we need to pray “give me a desire to honour you, Lord.” When we pray these two prayers, we can count on God’s guidance and provision.
