Since when is it news when an elected official of ours decides what he or she consumes for their lunch. Of course it isn’t and it shouldn’t be. If your name happens to be Rob Ford, however, it is news worthy…..and why is that? Simple

It is now vogue in Toronto to take every opportunity to embarrass the Mayor…fair enough he is Mayor and criticism comes with the job. The thing is though that the degree of vitriol and personal attack is off the charts. No topic is off limits when it comes to Mayor Ford…his weight, his holiday plans with family…there is no limit to what can be attacked and no decorum around where the line is. Cruel invective and half truths are fine…let’s jut shoot first and who cares about the accuracy or relevance to the important discourse that city governance should be about.

Look, people…all of us have qualities that are easy targets to others. I just happen to believe when we look at what warrants criticism in our elected officials that we need to focus folks. If Ford eats too much KFC, I frankly do not care. If Ford makes erratic policy statements that are I’ll conceived and bad for my city….I care and care deeply.

Report that and can the personal attacks that are purely churlish, mean spirited and serve no purpose but to satisfy the writers desire to cruelly characterize a politician who does not line up fully in your ideological camp. Grow up, report NEWS….and take your journalistic responsibility to a higher and more educated level.
